Although around for a few years now, the Wally 118 is nothing short of sensational, still able to turn heads amongest super yachts lined up in Monaco. Her design is futuristic and simplistic to the eye but underneath she oozes technological advances that are still not seen on some of today’s newly launched super yachts.
Luca Bassani’s Wally Yachts are not just an exercise in styling, it is in fact driven by some of the most demanding technical challenges ever taken on by a boatbuilder.
Genuinely new and high-tech, from her engine room to her folding radar mast, the Wallypower 118 has carbon, glass, and honeycomb construction, a superbly minimalist Euro interior by Lazzarini & Pickering, and a nearly 60-knot top speed. Scale models were tank tested at SSPA in Sweden and in Ferrari’s wind tunnel at Marinello, Italy. Intermarine, the renowned warship builder, built her. As a conscious re-evaluation of what express motoryachts should be like, she’s entitled to look a little out of the ordinary.
The 118 is an express motoryacht with berths for six guests in three en suite staterooms and six crew, and her accommodations are arranged symmetrically on each side of a straight, central corridor in that unique angular hull. The tender garage—in the bow—is revealed when a triangular section of the foredeck lifts, dead level, on three hydraulic rams. Just forward of the superstructure is an inset seating area, which can be shaded by a bimini top. That mysterious glass-sided deckhouse shelters a capacious saloon aft, with white upholstery, plain wood surfaces, and a seductive, beach-house ambience. The dining table sits amidships, just aft of the helm, made of carbon fiber.
The 118 has a CODOG (combined diesel or gas) propulsion system—jet engines for speed, diesels for everything else—common on small warships, but rare on yachts this give her the ability to hit that magic 60knot mark with ease.
While gas turbines offer tremendous power-to-weight benefits (3.6 hp per pound in the TF50s), they do have a downside, as one British Harrier pilot discovered not long ago in 100-plus-degree conditions in the Persian Gulf, when his breathless aircraft landed in the sea beside the carrier. Although the Wallypower is unlikely to suffer such drastic consequences, jet-engine output typically declines by about 0.5 percent for every 1ºF increase in air temperature.
The Wallypower uses three DDC TF50s (maritime cousins of the Chinook helicopter engine) driving three KaMeWa waterjets. Their 5,600 hp is calibrated at a lab temperature of 59°F—a little different from an August afternoon in Florida. However hot it gets, though, the 118 should always be able to cruise at 40 knots without effort. Not many 100-footers can make that claim.
There is a more conventional engine option as well: twin 3,650-hp MTU 4000 V16 diesels, which Bassani claims will give the boat a 45-knot top speed and around a 40-knot cruise speed. Go for these, and you’ll also save about $8 million on the asking price (which is $16.55 million when the yacht is equipped with twin diesels, $24.83 million as tested above, with triple gas turbines).
It seems though that Wally only ever produced one fully operational 118, there is speculation that they produced another 2 hulls in preparation for orders for the yacht, however to date they don’t seem to have happened.
If you know of more than one Wally 118 out there please let us know.

Sunseeker will be launching the New Portofino 48 at the London International Boat Show in January 2010, it will replace the current 47 Portofino, and with the 43 Superhawk production stopped, this will become the British, Poole based boat builder’s entry level model.
The Portofino 48 offers a remarkably large interior plan for her size, the centre piece of the 48 Portofino is a full-beam owner’s aft suite with huge windows to either side. Forward, there’s a clever new VIP suite in which the double bed cunningly swings apart in a scissors’ movement to create twin single berths in seconds if required.
Staying below, the Portofino offers a large saloon area that consists of a plentiful curved C-shaped seating and is equiped with all the usual amenities you would expect from a cruiser of this size, Sunseeker offer a mix of grain, bold lacquers and deep glass options to semi customise your boat to your individual taste.
On top , the Portofino has a sleek design incorporating a long stretched foredeck fitted with cantilevering sunpads. The cockpit screen is neatly engineered and runs aft in a smooth well designed manner, behind which is a helm station with pilot seating, wetbar and full dining arrangement in a large 2 sided L-shaped seating layout.
Sunseeker offer the Portofino 48 in an open and hard top version and keeping with tradition the customer has a choice of propulsion systems between the in line shafts with tunnel drives, or the latest easy to use pod drives. Performance comes in the choice of twin engines up to a total of 1150hp, producing speeds of around of 30 knots.

It’s not often you see a sport boat of this size hit all of the marks, however, the Formula 400 super sport seems to do just that. The Formula 400 comes well equipped with advanced technology features as standard including chart plotters, remote LED white/blue cockpit lighting, updated LCD HDTV/DVD, separate audio system tweeters and iPod™/MP3 ports.
They also offer an impressive array of optional extras and upgrades such as navigation electronics, engine monitors, satellite TV and DTS control systems. The joystick control technology offered with either the Volvo IPS or MerCruiser® Axius™ system provides excellent control while docking or manoeuvring in tight places.
The 400 interiors are very impressive also offering practicality and comfort with that feel of design over function quality. The lounge has an inspired invitation with its sleek solid wood table and smart décor pillows topped with luxurious leather. The wood has a high-gloss, Deep Cherry finish as with the flooring. The plush, subtly textured carpeting is new for 2009, as well as all other décor fabrics.
The Formula 400 also presents four upscale designer fabric themes by Tommy Bahama and Ralph Lauren. Finally, the cockpit design is a great place to be as a spectator lounging in style or at the helm blasting over the waves. It has a non-cluttered feel and a sophistication about it that would suit much larger boats of its size. Comfortably contoured lounge seating and adjustable tables provide creative versatility, and the integrated wet bar is a simple nice touch for those entertaining experiences. The aft lounge along with tables and filler cushions becomes a generous sunpad. The foredeck has two generous sunbrella sunpads for those who wish to be at the front of the action easily reached by way of the walk through windshield, a hallmark Formula cruiser feature. Formula continues to advance with their ranges and 2009 will bring no disappointment from the American manufacturer.

Feadship: 214′ Trident – The Queen of the Show
Read “The Golden Anniversary Queen” story for more on Trident.
May we present her royal highness. A paragon of comfort, style and elegance, Trident, this year’s “Queen of the Show,” offers a superb synthesis of Feadship luxury at its best. She possesses a handsomely classic flared bow and modern and tasteful semi-circular extensions with glass bulwarkson the aft decks. Her Highness sees all, including three decks at once via fashion plates on the stern. With a full beam master stateroom fit for an aristocrat, the yacht offers superior accommodations to
the owners and twelve royal guests in seven luxurious suites. Don’t feel like taking the stairs? Use the elevator to travel up through the entire yacht to the sun deck inside, in a virtually seamless solid block of marble. Location: Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.
Trinity Yachts: 196′ Bacarella
Calm, cool and classy. The largest of five superyachts designed and built by Trinity Yachts, LLC that will be presented by Trinity at this year’s show, Bacarella is charmingly cozy, refreshingly cool and smart as a whip. Her interior is designed by Bannenberg Designs and features mid-tone quarter sawn elm veneer, set out in panels, with the grain running 90 degrees along rebated nickel bands. Location: Bahia Mar, Face Dock 9A-9D
International Yacht Collection: Presents Heesen Yachts’ 164′ Man of Steel
Pocket full of kryptonite. Quite a few things are noteworthy about Man of Steel. But arguably, the most awe-inspiring feature is the floating glass floor over a bed of black river rock. Upon entering the yacht, you find yourself suspended on a piece of glass. The main salon lies in one direction and the illuminated glass walkway leads to a delicate day head and the VIP suite. The day head contains the same glass and black river rock floor, but here it unfurls up the feature wall, where it is no longer behind glass, but is exposed to the touch. Brilliant colors are drawn upon to create a lively, bright atmosphere in the lower level and especially in the “pop-culture” themed family room where a commissioned Bisazza tile mural is featured. Key recognizable elements such as the maccasa ebony wood, use of period correct sterling silver, crystal, and a platinum color scheme are re-edited into a fresh, modern, Art Deco-inspired salon space. You can pick up on Asian and Zen influences in the custom platforms for the furniture, the square proportions of the cushions, the glass-encased black river rock floor, and simplicity of the floral arrangements. Perhaps the most striking element of this yacht is the use of hot-rolled steel, which is threaded seamlessly and worked in elegantly throughout the yacht. The stairway floats off of the wall,
supported on a steel column, both designed and engineered by the owner himself. The stairs are created out of steel with carpet inserts. Steel is also a notable element in the reveals of the maces ebony cabinetry. Inviting royalty over for dinner? No need to worry, the glassware is all Baccarat and the dinnerware all Hermes. Location: Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina
Westport Shipyard: 164′ Evviva
Nouveau chic. A vessel as prized for the artistry of its contours as for the substance of its construction, Westport’s 164-ft. tri-deck flagship was developed using leading-edge three-dimensional modeling and structural software applications to meet every objective for speed, ride, maneuverability, integrity, quality and classing capability. The design and engineering teams collaborated with world-renowned designer Donald Starkey and prominent naval architect William Garden to develop a refined hull form for exceptional ocean-going performance, an innovative accommodation plan, which balances interior and on-deck spaces for maximum enjoyment and versatility, and a contemporary styling that ensures lasting appeal. The six-stateroom layout with on-deck full-beam master suite affords everyone a luxurious private retreat incorporating the finest fabrics, cabinetry, stone and leathers. An innovative arrangement includes a top-deck VIP suite with its own sun deck, a large formal dining room adjacent to the commercial-grade galley, and a garage aft for tenders and water toys. Designed for entertaining and relaxed socializing, the salon opens to a large covered aft deck with lounge, conversation areas and wet bar. Whether docking in Cannes for the red carpet film festival events or in Portofino for a glass of wine at sunset, you will arrive in style and on time. Location Hall of Fame, Face Dock 10-18

Inside the main salon you’ll find teak and sycamore flooring coupled with custom carved geometric wool carpet demonstrating an elegant color scheme of off-white, cream, light gold and taupe neutrals accented with dark rich blue tones.
