Superman test for the new Azimut Magellano 74

Add to FacebookAdd to DiggAdd to Del.icio.usAdd to StumbleuponAdd to RedditAdd to BlinklistAdd to TwitterAdd to TechnoratiAdd to Yahoo BuzzAdd to Newsvine

Sometimes there are boat tests that are done that stand out from the usual tests done by the Manufactureres and leading industry bodies, and here is such a time.

From Italy to winter and back. The mission of “My Voyage” is the severest test for a new type of yacht: the Azimut Magellano 74

My Voyage sets out from Varazze: the extraordinary sea trial of the new Azimut Magellano 74, with Rosita Missoni as godmother also Italian national soccer team coach Marcello Lippi among the friends who came to hail the Magellano’s departure 4000 nautical miles in the heart of winter in the Mediterranean to experience the pleasures and intensity of slow cruising.

Prestigious testers for the Azimut Megallano: Vittorio Missoni and the pilot Heinz-Harald Frentzen Saturday, 21 November, at 6:00 p.m., the Azimut Magellano 74 left the dock of Varazze Marina under the eye of the Yacht&Sail Channel’s television cameras and an enthusiastic crowd. Thus began “My Voyage”, a 4000-nautical mile cruise through the heart of the Mediterranean that, taken in wintertime, represents a severe test (Magellano is designed to sail in any weather conditions and with moderate or rough seas). The trip is as ambitious as it is challenging: from Europe to Africa, from the Italian Riviera to France, the Costa Brava, Palma de Mallorca and Sardinia, and then Tunisia after coasting along the fascinating and wild Sahara coasts. The return to Viareggio is scheduled for December 15th after stops in Malta and Rome. A first tour that will offer the team on board a chance to rediscover the pleasure of “sailing for sailing’s sake”, at a cruising speed of 11-12 knots, a pace that will make it possible to live the sea in all its facets and an invitation to stop and appreciate nature by making the most of precious occasions for contemplation that would otherwise be wasted. Magellano’s particular design also offers the possibility of reaching speeds of 24 knots when necessary, a reserve of power that makes the boat even safer and more interesting.

The day began very early, with the official launch by Azimut-Benetti Group President Paolo Vitelli, who had the pleasure and good fortune to be flanked by an exceptional godmother like Rosita Missoni. Signora Missoni, in turn accompanied by her husband, the noted fashion house’s creator, Ottavio Missoni, helped personalize the boat with enthusiasm and extraordinary creativity, adding the finishing touches to the interior furnishings, all by the Missoni Home Division, with her own hands and a care that can truly be defined as “loving”. The list of personalities present at the event included Marcello Lippi – who with an Azimut 62 berthed at the Viareggio Marina is a great friend of Azimut Yachts – expressed words of admiration, highlighting the teamwork that made it possible to build such an advanced boat that combines the spirit of adventure with comfort, freedom and safety.

In the course of the morning yacht owners were able to tour the Magellano and experience for the first time its comfort and its outstanding sailing qualities. Mingling with VIPs and the public, perhaps the most excited were the members of the team behind the Magellano project and its design and construction, from Azimut Yachts CEO Federico Martini to Ken Freivokh, Bill Dixon and Luca Cristino, respectively the designer of the boat, the designer of the underbody and the head of the project. For all them and for Azimut Yachts, Magellano represents a big win. A new model that takes its place as the point of reference of a new segment, launched in a particular moment like the current one, and what’s more together with another seven models, all present in Varazze to give even more importance and meaning to the event.

At Magellano’s helm is Dag Pike, the noted English journalist, one of the world’s most expert seamen who was recently decorated with the title “Yachtsman of the Year”. For once his mission isn’t racing against time to set speed records but, on the contrary, to find a new dimension of sailing: slowly, savoring mile after mile the delights of an environment designed to enhance the pleasures of company, good food and being together. Sharing the adventure of “My Voyage” is Jessica Taylor, one of the few English women ship captains, Alex Pino, an expert sailor and close friend of Dag Pike, and Manfredo Pinzauti, a photographer who, free from maneuvers and shipboard duties, has the pleasant task of documenting the undertaking. His photographs will be posted on Flickr (account: Magellano My Voyage).

Magellano will be awaited in Tunisia by the cameras of Yacht&Sail Channel as well as an exceptional crew. Former Formula 1 driver Frentzen and Vittorio Missoni will board, plus Frank and Fiona Walker, an English couple with a rich professional curriculum: politics and diplomacy for him, television journalism for her. Both sea lovers, they decided to sail around the world and therefore enthusiastically accepted to be part of the Magellano project.

A diverse group of VIPs, creatives and sports champions, held together by a great passion for the sea. They will be the ones who truly put this new approach to sailing to the test. Along the coasts of the wild Tunisian islands they will experience the intensity of slow cruising, the pleasure of sharing the elegant concreteness of a large open space, the exclusive comfort of a boat built to multiply the emotions.

My Voyage’s partners include Missoni, which for the occasion dresses the Magellano with Missoni Home fabrics and the crew with its fashion creations, Caterpillar, which designed the engines selected for the Magellano by Azimut Yachts, and Gallinea, whose Innovation for Boats division realizes technical applications aimed at improving the onboard living experience.

Magellano is a boat that appeals to a broad public, that of lovers of the sea. For this reason Azimut Yachts wanted to share this event – lived with great intensity both on board and ashore – with all the fans, who can follow the cruise live online by connecting to the blog that posts the onboard accounts (http://magellanomyvoyage.azimutyachts.com). The blog in turn contains the links to reach the films shot during the days, posted on YouTube, as well as the images published on Flickr

Statement 42 V-bottom – breaking the mould

There is an up-and-coming rising star in the exciting world of ultimate power boats and they call themselves Statement Marine.

They have 2 fantastic models on their books, however, their latest creation is called the “Statement 42 V-Bottom”, the clue is in the name because this boat certainly is here to make a statement and give any owner a ride very few production boats can match.

This boat is not for the faint-hearted and is an outright mind-blowing thoroughbred. The owners behind Statement Marine have smashed onto the scene with one of the fastest offshore V-bottoms on the market, add a luxurious interior and a revolutionary suspension cockpit, with one of the best graphics paint jobs around and you have yourself a winning formula.

The fundamental question facing the Statement 42 V-bottom is whether it could live up to the hype on the water. Powerboat test drivers Bob Teague and John Tomlinson got the first opportunity to test the new model, which was fitted with twin Mercury Racing HP1075SCi engines.

Both were impressed with the 42’s handling characteristics, build quality and performance, the V-stepped-bottom boat cut through 3-foot swells easily and aggressively. This is a testament to Statement Marine whose staff is made up of former offshore powerboat racers who know how to set up a boat for handling and performance.

The Statement 42 has a revolutionary cockpit set up to ensure passengers’ comfort during what’s sure to be a memorable ride. The entire cockpit is suspended on large airbags, which act as a shock absorber, and the firmness can be adjusted to the owner’s personal preference.

Statement also provided lap belts in the bucket seats to keep passengers firmly planted which you can understand when you see the figures behind this boat’s performance. With the correct set-up the Statement 42 will hit 62mph in under 20 seconds and if you’re feeling brave she will push on to 130mph at 6000 revs.

The test driver Tomlinson said the 42 Ultimate ran straight and was impervious to wind gusts. While running a boat at these types of speeds should never be taken lightly, Tomlinson said the boat felt like it was going 30 mph slower than its actual speed.

Credit has to go to the air-cushioned cockpit that reduces the hard hits and vibrations usually felt in V-bottoms.

Statement will fully customise the 42 V-bottom to an owner’s personal specification, the Statement we reviewed here had been fitted out in red tanned leather with pleated buckets and velour covering the dash.

All the instrumentation was electronic no analogue on-site with navigation systems coming in the form of Northstar 6100i screens in both dashes and a Mercury SmartCraft system view monitor that raised up from the top of the driver’s dash to the starboard.

What is a very nice touch and something you may not expect from such a hard-nosed power boat is the accommodation below, a plush cabin with facing lounges and horseshoe-shaped seating in the bow.

Indirect lighting behind valances and near the floor gives the cabin a cosy and comfortable feel, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a weekender oh no, it’s just a place to chill once you had your head blasted at 100+ mph.

Attention to detail oozes from the Statement 42 V-bottom in its build quality and is reflected in its price, don’t expect much change from a million at $890,000 the Statement is a high-end market product. However, in its defence, you won’t find many other boats that can match the Statement 42 V bottom for its performance, handling and build quality add the fantastic design and innovation and you have the complete package.

Grand Banks launches two new models at Fort Lauderdale 2009 boat show

The luxury trawler yacht builder Grand Banks has a fantastic heritage and is still at the cutting edge of classic boat design and building. Grand Banks announced the arrival of 2 new models to the ranges and set Fort Lauderdale boat show as the launch platform to show them off.

GB46S

Reported by Grand Banks:

Grand Banks Yachts kicked off the 2009 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with a strong lineup of models in each of its Heritage, Eastbay and Aleutian Series, plus announcements about two new yachts that will launch early next year. The company chose this event to reveal an early look at the new 46 Eastbay SX, the first model in the Down East-styled Eastbay Series to feature Zeus pod-drives from CMD. With standard twin 600-horsepower diesels, the 46SX has predicted top speeds of over 30 knots, with improved handling and fuel economy thanks to the Zeus propulsion system. The 46SX also offers a three-stateroom layout option, a noteworthy feature for a vessel of this size. “Like the 41EU before her, this boat was designed around the Zeus drive system,” said Neil McCurdy, Vice President of Sales and Service for Grand Banks. “That compact footprint opens up a lot of extra space for interior accommodations. I think owners will be delighted with every single aspect of this new Eastbay.” Grand Banks also shared more news about its new 53 Aleutian RP, a luxury raised-pilothouse model that will also launch in early 2010. The company recently marked the sale of Hull , before it was even out of its molds, and expects to secure more sales during the Lauderdale show. This year’s boat show features popular models in each of Grand Banks’ three yacht series: the 59 Aleutian RP, the 39 Eastbay SX, and the Zeus-powered 41 Heritage EU. The trawler-styled 41EU made its international debut at last year’s Lauderdale show; since that time it has sold into markets from Korea to Canada, America to Australia and beyond, gathering strong reviews all along the way. The 41EU is one reason that despite an economic slump affecting much of the marine industry, Grand Banks remains strongly positioned to weather the financial storm for this season and well into the future. “We’re fortunate in a number of ways, despite the current market conditions,” said GB president and CEO Rob Livingston.

GB53R

“Grand Banks continues to be among the most highly regarded brands anywhere. We have an incredible team of people and a growing dealer network. Our cash reserves are strong, and the company continues to invest in improving our yachts and our processes every day.” Earlier this week, Grand Banks hosted its 2009 Dealer Meeting here in Fort Lauderdale, with new dealerships in attendance including those from Greece, Australia, and the Pacific Northwest. The event was also an opportunity to recognize the top-performing GB dealers, including overall winner Grand Banks Italia in Orbitello, Italy. Winners in North America included Boatworks Yacht Sales (East Coast) and Stan Miller Yachts (West Coast). About Grand Banks – Since 1956, Grand Banks Yachts, Ltd. has built yachts of superior quality that have become industry hallmarks and earned a loyal following around the world. Renowned for their handmade craftsmanship, distinctive good looks, and tried and true all-weather capabilities, Grand Banks yachts continue to be the choice of discerning boaters today.
